Narrate PR was excited to start 2024 as a media training provider for Shine , the national organisation dedicated to supporting people affected by mental ill health.

Led by Hazel Dobbyn of Narrate PR and grounded in consultation with participants, a bespoke two-part media training programme was delivered to members of Shine’s ‘The Voice Platform’ in February. The Voice Platform is a group of volunteers who have lived experience of mental illness and/or are caring for a family member on their road to recovery.

To give participants a good understanding of how the media works and the tools they need to tell their story, the first session provided insights into Ireland’s media landscape, effective storytelling, privacy protection, social media etiquette, and media interview techniques.

Building upon the foundation laid in Session 1, the final workshop focused on building media skills and knowledge, simulated media interviews, feedback and an overview on advocacy.

The media skills training programme was very well received with 66% of attendees rating the sessions as excellent and the remainder giving ratings of very good and good. 100% of attendees would recommend the training to their fellow members.

Feedback from attendees included:

“The training was a good positive experience, giving insights into the media, interview preparation, and confidence building”

“Thank you for the awesome training and mock interview. It was useful and highlighted the importance of preparation and that you are the expert”

“I do feel more confident about participating in media interviews”

“Training very insightful for all forms of communication”
